To my darling boy,
Today’s Mothers day, and it’s exactly five weeks until the day we’ll finally (hopefully) welcome you into this world.
From the moment I saw the positive result on the test, I instantly fell in love with you. You haven’t even arrived into this world, but the love we have for you is already endless. I hope we can show you just a fraction of that love.
You have a world full of adventures on the horizon. A life full of memories to cherish, and your mam and dad will be holding your hand every step of the way. Forever, my baby boy.
Before we welcome you into our world, there are a few things I need you to know.
You’ll make a lot of friends in your life, but one thing you’ll never be able to choose is your family.
At times, this will frustrate you when I’m nagging on you for the tenth time to pick up your dirty undies off the bathroom floor, or your dad will tell you off for being cheeky to your mam (I know it’ll happen someday!).
You’ll probably feel embarassed of your parents a lot of the time, but I hope that you’ll always feel comfortable enough to approach your father and I for advice and support, no matter the topic. Believe it or not, your parents do have a lot of wisdom in their heads!
Your grandparents will spoil you rotten, little man. You already have them wrapped around your little finger!
Your dad is so excited to take you to Old Trafford for the first time, to sing songs in the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ whilst watching your favourite players on the pitch. Listen to your father’s stories about watching your team play around Europe, and the friends he has made along the way.
I wonder who’s boy you will be? Mamma’s boy? I bloody hope so!
It doesn’t matter how hard family life turns out to be, I hope our love towards you will never be questioned. Any venture you attempt, any task to be solved, you’ll have your family behind you until the end.
When the world is a tough and nasty place, remember that our home will always be your sanctuary to seek refuge whenever you feel necessary. From the first day to the last, we’ll be there.
There is so much more to life than the walls of your home. We want you to catch the travel bug and to see the world as early as possible.
From visiting the Lochs of Scotland, and walking the mountains in the Lake District, to living the Spanish lifestyle in Madrid and learning the history in museums in Germany, venture out to see every corner (but always come home to your mami!).
I want you to meet people and learn their cultures by appreciating their ways of life. Promise me one thing – to never judge a way of living that is not the same as yours. This world is full of wonders, and that’s what makes our planet so special.
It doesn’t matter what situation you find yourself in, don’t ever forget to be kind. Remember to always treat people with respect, to say please and thank you, to open doors to others and to be courteous at all times.
Being popular and successful means nothing if you are not kind. Always remember this.
Don’t be afraid to show emotions
Never shy away from your emotions. It’s perfectly natural to cry if you need to, and don’t let anyone tell you any different.
Don’t take the stiff upper lip. Showing that you’re upset or hurt does not make you any less of a man. Speak to us if you ever feel upset or you’re hurting, and don’t ever be afraid to ask for help. With us, you won’t have to face any problem alone.
You’ll be welcomed into a world full of mountains, greenery and nature, and you don’t know how lucky you are to have this on your doorstep.
From burrowing in the garden for worms, to walking Eryri’s mountains and beyond with your dad and taid Marchlyn, nature will be such a big part of your life.
Although we both want you to appreciate all the different countries of the world, there is no place like home, and with the area you have surrounding you, it doesn’t get any better than this.
Admire the different seasons, and the plants and species that come along with these. Listen to the sound of silence in the great outdoors that feels like a world away from the hustle and bustle of the towns and cities. Help your father to feed the birds in the garden and see the tit and robin nibbling on the food whilst sitting on the garden fence.
You are the world.
It doesn’t matter what part of the world you end up; you’re always going to be Welsh. Be proud of this. Never feel embarrassed of our language and country. The ability to speak more than one language is a special talent to have, and to grow up in an area that is as Welsh as ours, I’m pleased to say that you’ll always feel that love.
Feel the pride in watching your country play football. I’m sure that taid Dre’s already dying to take you to watch the games as soon as possible and to introduce you to a world full of noise, fun and joy. Go and watch your heroes play for their country with a smile on your face and sing the best anthem in the world with your loudest voice.
You’ll have people questioning our language. Ignore these people.
Recognise how much people have fought over our beautiful language and to make sure that new generations are able to keep the language alive. We’re only a small country, but our hearts are huge.
There’s only five weeks until we meet you, and I’m sat here wondering how you’ll look and what type of person you’ll turn out to be, whilst you’re happily doing your morning stretches in my tummy.
Although we haven’t met yet, one thing is for certain is you’ve lit up my life in a way that no one has ever done before. I promise you’ll never go to bed sad, and I’ll keep you safe throughout this whole journey.
I love you so much already my little man, it’s hard to see how my love towards you will ever grow any more once you finally arrive into this world. My heart will burst with love for you.
I’ll see you soon,
Happy Mother’s Day to every mam, grandmother, aunt, stepmother and any fathers taking over the role of a mam. You are all doing the best job of caring for your children. Today’s all about you.
To any of you who can’t celebrate with your mothers today, you are also in my thoughts. Try not to think of the bad. Remember the memories you shared with your mamas and tell your close ones about these memories. A mother’s love never dies because the memories you shared will never disappear.
To all the mothers in the world, thank you.
